The Middle East has been thrust into a state of unprecedented regional warfare following a weekend of devastating military escalations. On Sunday, Iranian state media confirmed the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, 86, following a series of “decapitation strikes” launched by a joint US-Israeli coalition.

The operation, codenamed Operation Roaring Lion by Israeli forces and Operation Epic Fury by the United States, has triggered a massive retaliatory response from Tehran, targeting civilian infrastructure and military installations across the Gulf.

As the conflict enters its second day, the scale of the violence has widened significantly:

Iran Strikes Back: In a fierce retaliatory wave, Iranian ballistic missiles and drones have targeted major cities in Israel and Gulf states hosting US military personnel. Reports from Beit Shemesh, west of Jerusalem, confirm at least nine fatalities after a missile struck a residential building.

Gulf Airports Targeted: Chaos has erupted at some of the world’s busiest travel hubs. Dubai International and Abu Dhabi airports have both sustained damage, with authorities in the UAE reporting at least one death and multiple injuries following drone strikes and falling debris.

Casualties Mounting: While exact figures remain difficult to verify, human rights agencies suggest that civilian casualties in Iran have exceeded 200, including a reported strike on a school in the southern city of Minab.

The geopolitical shockwaves are being felt globally. Airspace across Israel, Jordan, Iraq, the UAE, Qatar, and Bahrain has been shuttered, leaving hundreds of thousands of travellers including thousands of British nationals stranded.

In a move that has sent tremors through global energy markets, the Iranian Navy has reportedly broadcast a ban on all transit through the Strait of Hormuz. If maintained, the closure of this vital chokepoint could see oil prices soar to record highs.

The British Foreign Office, alongside leaders in France and Germany, has expressed “steadfast support” for the US and Israel while condemning Iranian retaliatory strikes. Conversely, Russia and Turkey have warned of a “cynical murder” that threatens to destabilise global security for decades.

As night falls over Tehran and Jerusalem, the world remains on a knife-edge, waiting to see if diplomacy can find a foothold or if the region is destined for a protracted “Second Iran War.”

This is a rapidly developing story. We will provide further updates as more information becomes available.
